Motivation in Psychology

Motivation in psychology is an important word. It is the key to success in all spheres. The word motivation comes from the word ‘motive’, a selfish expression of self-need. It is an inner force, which drives an individual to do certain actions.

Motivation is the fuel of doing any simple to adventurous work. It is also the state of driving and pulling forces, which result in persistent behavior directed to certain goals. Motivation determines human behavior. The intensity of motivation is to achieve objective goals. Lindsay defined motivation as a combination of forces, which initiates, directs, and sustains behavior towards a goal.

What are the Types of Motivation?

Motivation may be positive or negative, and it is not a manipulation. A motivated person acts willingly and knowingly. A positively motivated person is often more successful than a negatively motivated person.

The terms motives, needs, wants, desires, and urges are all interrelated and interdependent. Motivation helps people to achieve objective goals in life. In every human being, there exists motivational character, but these need to be aroused by appreciation, reward, or praise.

Unconscious Motivation VS Motivation in Psychology

The unconscious motivation is the expression of the unconscious drives from the hidden mind, which shows up in behavior and thought. The term unconscious motivation thus describes the key idea of psychologists.

What are the Characteristics of Motivation?

The most common and notable features of motivation are personal and integral feelings, dynamic and continuous processes, goal-directed behavior, and the product of anticipated values from an action.

What are the Principles of Motivation?

There are four principles of motivation. They are participation and integration with organizational units, communication, inference, and delegated authority.

Participation and Integration with the Organizational Unit: Motivation in Psychology

The principle of participation is important in any motivational process because it encourages or initiates consultation with the subordinates for better performances within the organization or any hospital activities or management. Wholehearted participation brings confidence within the employees to feel free to discuss the pros and cons of the group activities to achieve an objective goal.

In such a participatory role, the whole group must feel that they are part of the organization. It is total integration. That is why they will work hard and become more loyal to the organization. There are many ways in which, an individual or the whole community can participate in the welfare of the community, society, or organization; such as managing a hospital or clinic. The community can provide manpower, logistic support, and funds. They can activate themselves in planning management and evaluation.

In other words, within the community, the people must be motivated to integrate with overall welfare activities based on ‘give and take’ services. In recent days, the common man’s participation in the welfare of the community has remarkably increased, because of effective motivation and awareness created within them by the sincere effort of the social workers and media of governmental and non-governmental agencies.

What is Communication in Motivation?

Effective communication is a must to effectively motivate an individual or a group to attain the goal of the organization. All basic components of communication must ensure clear and specific communication to achieve an objective goal.

Behavioral scientists have opined for efficiency and performance at work in the following way. The observation of the scientists concludes that positive motivation not only increases performance but it multiplies performances in a physically fit person.

  • Performance
  • Motivation
  • High
  • Attitude
  • Organization

Inference

Performance increases in motivated person. It multiplies in highly motivated people in any organization, where all employees of the organization have a participatory role. That is everybody in the organization is committed to uplifting the organization.

Performance depends on the positive attitude holders, who are usually highly motivated. It also depends on effective and fit body functional ability in a motivated person. All these conditions have to be counted at the time of recruitment of the employees in a well-organized institution.

Who is Delegated Authority?

The increased authority and delegation of power in any organization will motivate people for the successful operation of the organization and the attainment of objective goals. In other words, all employees of the organization must feel that they have job satisfaction.

What is the Importance of Motivation?

Motivation is the key element to determine the level of performance. High motivation makes people more attentive and more regular at work and minimizes absent days at work in highly motivated people. Positive motivation gradually changes negative attitude to positivity.

This important observation must, therefore, be emphasized when lecturing or conducting workshops in the labor force or student group.

A Sound Motivational System for Motivation in Psychology

A sound motivational system ensures human needs, and requirements, and urges them to satisfy themselves. A sound motivational system selects good candidates for jobs. A sound motivational system is a flexible system, which should allow rewards and punishments as applicable to the respective employees or persons. Furthermore, a sound motivational system produces hard-working personnel and encourages them to continue their hard-working habits by giving them incentives and rewards.

Role of Morality and Motivation in Motivation in Psychology

High morality ensures high motivation and performance and therefore, higher production at work. Such employees are usually committed to the organization. Low morality ensures low motivation and low performance at work. Therefore, there is lower production at work. Employees are usually not committed to the organization. A higher mortality person can also be of low motivation when workers are not committed. Therefore, performance and production are less at work. Low morality persons can have high motivation for fear of punishment. Therefore, they can offer high performance and high production at work.

Why Motivations are Required for the Average Person?

An average person, as a rule, is usually passive and cannot do things independently and properly. He needs proper motivation. Motivation helps to gear up moral stamina to perform a piece of work. Anyone lacking motivation cannot do any hard work. It’s a good idea to occasionally ask for volunteers to take on projects instead of always assigning them. This way you can learn which of your people is ambitious and would like to move up in the next phase.

Many people on the job do not seem to realize that extra work and opportunity are virtually synonymous.  Yet some people prefer to look for reasons why they could not take on an extra assignment, rather than recognize the value of that opportunity. Motivation is the key to their success. Always thank or congratulate an individual when he or she volunteers to do a job. Your recognition provides a lift, confirms that the volunteer’s decision was a good one, and shows that you appreciate the help.
